Antarctica
Location: Antarctica
Last year my Brother and I went to the Antarctica and I still lay in bed at night and dream about our time there.
Antarctica holds ninety percent of the world's ice and seventy percent of it is fresh water, when the ice is at its' thickest it is 4.5km deep. Just this information alone given to us while on the trip totally shocked me. I had to keep pinching myself to truly believe that I was there.
It's funny to think that in the Antarctic there are birds that can't fly (Penguins) and mammals that can't walk (seals). It was wonderful to be somewhere that there is not a spec of pollution in the air, and because not a lot of humans visit the animals aren't scared of you at all.
When we were floating along, the water was crystal clear and the glaciers looked sensational. There are Glacier shelves near the ocean entry and the ice spills over the shelves and freezes, so it looks as though they are frozen waterfalls. Every now and then you come across a group of Penguins traveling together, there must have been about a thousand of them at one time. Their quack sounds like a thousand trumpets and that sound along with the Seals whimpering, the Gulls yapping, and the thundering Glaciers, at times it was quiet a racket.
One truly amazing scene was the Penguins guarding Whalebones. Along some of the coastline there are Whale carcasses littered everywhere. Our guide told us that the Penguins guard the bones from the Seals. We saw about two hundred of them stand around the bones as others take the role as lookouts for stirring Seals.
Getting to Antarctica was half the fun. We crossed the Drake Passage leaving from Argentina, the seas can get quite rough with gale force winds and gigantic swell, but after all you are going to what feels like the edge of the earth.
When in the Antarctic time seems to stand still and reality seems to be no where in sight. For my brother and me it was the trip of a lifetime and we feel if we never travel anywhere else on Earth we would be content knowing that we have already visited the most tranquil and breath taking destination possible.
